Learn to communicate in meaningful contexts -

Many students struggle to even understand short sentences or hold simple conversations, after memorizing countless words and grammar rules. Traditional learning often feels like boring, silent memorization. But our brains are wired to understand meaningful messages in context. That’s why, in my course, we always learn through stories and dialogues. Language is meant for communication, not for memorizing disconnected words!

👂 Meaningful and Comprehensible Input

Our brains acquire language by engaging with materials that are mostly understandable, yet slightly challenging. The more engaging and contextual the input, the faster we 'pick up' the language. In contrast, translating word by word or analyzing grammar makes us sound robotic.

In my class, we use stories and dialogues created by me, which means, there is no textbook. With 90% of the class conducted in Mandarin, you’ll get maximum input. New words are introduced through visuals and real-life examples, making them easy to understand and remember.

Through personalized questions, visual aids, and stories, you’ll naturally internalize the language. You won’t just memorize words—you’ll use them in meaningful contexts.

How do we learn at Stickynote?

Aquiring a language requires consistent, frequent exposure. That’s why most of my groups meet for two 50-minute sessions each week, rather than a long one.
HERE IS HOW WE LEARN IN A CLASS 
 WARM-UP
We start with a friendly chat, where I'll ask questions about your daily life, incorporating language points from previous classes.

 New Words
Key words/grammar points are introduced in Mandarin using gestures, pictures, examples, and personalized questions.

 story time
You'll hear a short dialogue or story with visual cues, and answer questions to check comprehension, providing an opportunity to clarify any questions.

  Practice and creativity
Time to practice! You'll answer more personalized questions, retell stories, or even create your own in similar scenarios.

    AFTER CLASS
Complete a simple homework by compiling our stories in class.

You are able to understand and hold some very simple conversations regarding basic daily activities, talk about location, hobbies, and money.

You are able to roughly understand materials using HSK 2 vocabulary or structures, and start to get in touch with some HSK 3 structures, e.g. 把 and 被 structure, and all kinds of complements.

You can understand most of the materials related to everyday life, and you start to be able to talk about your opinions related to more abstract concepts, such as love, relationship, spending habits, traveling.

Jun Wu

Hi friends, I'm Jun. I've been teaching Chinese language and culture for over a decade, and hold a B.A. in Teaching Mandarin as a Second Language, and a M.Ed in Curriculum Design and Teaching Methodology.

As a life-long language learner myself, I know what it’s like to feel stuck and lost when learning a second language. Now after having lived and taught in three different countries to students of all levels and ages, from elementary school to university courses, I'm fascinated not only by the differences among cultures, but how much we share in common. 

Together, we will make this learning process fun while making meaningful connections along the way!
