Let's hold more meaningful conversations
in Mandarin.

Have you been learning Mandarin for a while, but are struggling to move beyond basic conversations - small talk on repeat with friends and family, stuck when trying to express deeper thoughts?

I admit that small talk is a real hurdle for me.🙄 That's why I designed this program to provide my students opportunities to be immersed in authentic Mandarin and discuss real-life topics beyond the basics.

Course Reviews

As an American-born Chinese, learning Mandarin has always been tricky. Many of us understand the language reasonably well but particularly struggle with speaking fluently, with most Mandarin courses either leaning too heavily on esoteric textbook knowledge or being designed for beginners, making it difficult to improve meaningfully.

I’ve been taking Jun Laoshi’s Mandarin Proficiency Hub class for the past year and have made immense progress because of her course - the last time I was in Taipei this year, I had multiple native speakers compliment my Mandarin and ask me if I spent my childhood in Taiwan because I sounded like a native speaker!

What I love most about the course is the breadth of topics covered, from social media addiction to family dynamics to societal beauty standards. Because these are all topics a group of close friends would discuss, the class material is both engaging and relevant; nothing feels academic or dry, and each class introduces a new set of applicable vocabulary words that can actually be used in day-to-day conversation. Jun Laoshi also does a great job at creating a very warm, supportive environment, with each student making noticeable progress with each class!

If you are a heritage speaker or a non-native learner serious about learning the language, I can say this is easily the best Mandarin course I’ve taken. I would highly recommend Jun Laoshi’s MPH class!

I’ve been studying Chinese on and off for 25 years, yet it’s always been hard to get past an intermediate or maybe advanced-intermediate level, and I've often struggled to find the right type of class. Jun’s program has been exactly what I've needed, and hit the right level to keep me moving forward.

Over the years, I’ve tried almost everything: CDs in my car and Rosetta Stone back in the day, in-person classes in New York City, and private teachers when I lived in Shanghai. I once even wound up in a rowdy Sunday class of third- and fourth-graders one summer (the insane condition I somehow agreed to to get my kids to take the class). Some of these were better than others, but Jun's classes really stand out.

Her course topics are always interesting and relevant, and the live Zoom sessions are consistently engaging and fun. I regularly find myself speaking and listening in Chinese for nearly two hours at a stretch. The pop-up pinyin on her video transcripts has also helped me finally strengthen my reading skills, which had been a long-standing weak spot. I can now participate more comfortably in conversations with my wife’s family and connect more easily with the local Chinese community. I highly recommended her class!

I really loved my experience in 吴老师's Mandarin Proficiency Hub—it was a great way to return to learning Chinese after some time away from formally studying the language.

The course resources and materials were engaging and super applicable to daily life, and it was also fun to be able to converse with classmates from different backgrounds.

I would definitely recommend to those who are looking for a natural and encouraging speaking environment; learning Chinese is truly a lifelong endeavor and I'm grateful to 吴老师 for making it feel so approachable and fun.

君老师's Chinese course is absolutely amazing. She brings us all into deep water and there’s nowhere to hide. You will have to express yourself and start using your Chinese along with your classmates to go deeper into the content

Jun Laoshi is so emotionally intelligent , kind and incredibly empathic. It’s amazing how she connects the class to the content of the lesson. sometimes I’m shocked at what myself and classmates are able

It’s an amazing class. Try it and you’ll learn Chinese in such a fun and engaging way and much faster than you ever did before.

I highly recommend this class. I'm excited every week to see the new material/topic we will discuss. Wu laoshi selects real-life native Mandarin videos to study which helps improve my listening comprehension and gives me a window into pop culture and current events in China.

Additionally, the conversation and learning environment Wu lao shi facilitates is always fun and engaging. And often times I come away from class not only having learned more mandarin but also more about myself and my peers.

Jun Wu laoshi is a teacher that brings the best out of students. She selects engaging native content, creates a good platform and atmosphere for learning whilst also using and importantly revising new vocabulary.

I have been using her group courses for a few years now and each time I come out feeling that not only has my language improved, but also my understanding of Chinese culture and modern life in China.

Jun-laoshi makes learning fun and I always look forward to new topics. I recommend her to anyone who wants to improve their speaking skills.

📚 First, let's change up the learning materials.

We'll ditch those scripted textbooks, and instead use the latest real-world videos. We delve into Chinese daily life and explore current trends via reality tv shows, talk shows, standup comedies, and more.

In each cohort, we'll focus on some major themes, such as spending habits, social life, mental health, etc. Under each theme, there are 2-4 chapters covering specific sub-topics, like "Consumerism Trap", "Exquisite Poverty", "Decluttering". Each week, we'll go through one chapter, with review sessions on the 4th and 8th weeks - to help you better consolidate your knowledge and skills.

This means you'll
encounter some core words multiple times for better retention, while expanding your vocabulary within the relevant context.

🗣️ Now, let's dive into live sessions for interactions, feedback, and accountability.

The key to language learning success is consistency. But what if you are struggling to stick to your study routine? Learning with a group can make a significant difference.

Join a weekly live sessions with an intimate group of 3 to 5 students for live interactions and feedback. Here, the focus is all on sharpening your listening and speaking skills. Summarize content of the video in your own words, share your thoughts on topics of discussion, and collaborate on group activities such as role-play and debate.

You will also get weekly speaking projects, and get personalized feedback on it

These elements are designed to improve your accountability, maintain consistency, and provide structured learning, helping you overcome procrastination.

Meet the instructor

Jun Wu

Hi friends, I'm Jun. I've been teaching Chinese language and culture for over a decade, and hold a B.A. in Teaching Mandarin as a Second Language, and a M.Ed in Curriculum Design and Teaching Methodology.

As a life-long language learner myself, I know what it’s like to feel stuck and lost when learning a second language. Now after having lived and taught in three different countries to students of all levels and ages, from elementary school to university courses, I'm fascinated not only by the differences among cultures, but how much we share in common. Together, we will make this learning process fun while making meaningful connections along the way!
