Which description best matches your current spoken Mandarin?

Beginner: I can handle basic everyday conversations, e.g. introducing myself, sharing simple personal info, managing survival situations — using short sentences and memorized phrases. I can ask and answer simple questions, though I still rely heavily on rehearsed expressions and sometimes mix in words from other languages. Low Intermediate: I can manage simple everyday situations — talking about myself and family, ordering food, making basic purchases — by piecing together what I know. I mostly react to what others say rather than lead, and I often pause or search for words. People can generally understand me despite the mistakes. Intermediate: I can hold conversations on a range of everyday topics, e.g. daily life, interests, travel, shopping, and ask questions to get what I need. I can start to talk about some abstract topics, such as feelings and preferences. I build my sentences by combining what I know, though I sometimes pause or rephrase while searching for the right words. High Intermediate: I can talk comfortably and confidently about familiar topics like work, school, and hobbies with little need to pause. I can tell stories and describe events in connected speech. I can also hold simple conversations on abstract and complex topics, although on less familiar topics, I may occasionally struggle to keep up or run out of language. Advanced: I can participate fully in everyday conversations and discuss broader topics like current events, work matters, or community issues. I can share opinions, narrate stories, and describe events fluently across all time frames, and I handle unexpected situations without much difficulty.
